Finely crafted fantasy fiction with a touch of refinement and empathy.
It’s been said that home is where the heart is, but for the three Glaive siblings, that home and heart have been torn asunder. Isha, the resolute middle-sister, is claimed as a prize by a self-important, high-ranking government official because of her unique violet eye color. Unwilling to stand up to the powerful ruling class, Isha’s father, though a king himself, watches impassively as his daughter is carted off to be held as an ornament in a demented collection of human gallery exhibits. Raiz, the fiery younger brother, vows revenge on those who continually take advantage of the people of Trost and other kingdoms, particularly on the arrogant man who kidnapped his sister. Frustrated by his father’s inaction, Raiz spends years honing his ability to wield the shine, a gift of power from the sun that is bestowed upon a small number of divinely chosen citizens. The third sibling, eldest brother Dazen, still lives in Trost with their father, awaiting his destiny as heir to the throne. Though Dazen owes his loyalty to the King-Radiant, a man responsible for the safety of the citizens in all the kingdoms, he cannot overlook the fate his sister has suffered with the tacit approval of this king. Together, these three dynamic siblings each work toward the goal of freedom in their own different ways. Powers will shift, trust will be forged, and loyalty will be tested, whether the Glaive family is ready for it or not.
If you enjoy finely crafted fantasy fiction with a touch of refinement and empathy, you’ll find that few are better than A King’s Radiance by L.R. Schulz. The world of Zapour, including its six individual kingdoms, is meticulously charted with each land and people possessing their own distinct voice and character. Also absorbing is the well-rounded history and religion of these sun-worshiping people. Deeper subplots emerge as the Glaive siblings push forward in their pursuit of justice and liberation, adding infinite new layers and possibilities to an already well-proportioned novel. It would be impossible to choose a favorite character, as each one is unique and endearing. Isha is a constant source of light and life, despite her cruel mistreatments, so the chapters told from her point of view are quick to tug at the heartstrings, making you want to cheer on this likable soul. On the opposite end of the spectrum is passionate young Raiz, with his impulsive decisions and his unwavering commitment to whatever cause he feels is right. Commendably, Schulz does an especially good job at conjuring meaningful and memorable secondary characters. Like a moth attracted to a candle that glows steadily in a dark room, readers will be helplessly drawn into the captivating world of shine bearers, shady pasts, and deceitful rulers in A King’s Radiance.
