A Reckoning of Cinders by Ryan Elledge

It seems that Tetamii’s schemes have finally caught up to him. Imprisoned on a ship, forcibly subdued, and cut off from his fiery gift, Tetamii has failed again, an offense that won’t please his mentor, Magzii. But he survives the ordeal and is accepted back into the Clipped Gulls, a minor victory as Magzii isn’t a man given to mercy. However, there is more happening behind the scenes, a powerful hand calling the shots within the Gulls, and Tetamii isn’t the only one who senses it. Though the ever-defiant Rav opposes Tetamii, they both possess a powerful connection to the World Shroud. These days, though, Rav is struggling to use her gift without it killing her. Not one to easily admit when she needs help, Rav makes the treacherous journey to a hidden school rumored to help hone lightblood skills. If the school exists. If she can find it. And if they accept her. But headstrong Rav is running out of options. The Illuminated Death has nearly taken her before, and the people who love Rav won’t watch her die that way. Unfortunately, her out-of-control skills have drawn the attention of a powerful man with nearly unlimited resources. She and Tetamii barrel headlong into an intertwined fate, though neither will let their destiny be dictated to them.

“When one spends a childhood otherized… It can become second nature to defer to those who own their sense of belonging.” This wise observation on how early experiences shape behaviors and self-perception is a common thread for the determined protagonists in A Reckoning of Cinders. Spunky characters, sinister motivations, and unshakable loyalties set the stage as Rav and Tetamii face relentless trials both within and around them. Building on a powerful foundation, this second installment is a seamless continuation in the series. Rav is a prickly-but-lovable anti-hero who is led more by her heart than her head. Tetamii’s story arc is interesting, as he is crafted as an earnest, sympathetic character audiences will root for, despite a history of bad choices. Though the cities and landscapes have been largely explored, this novel expands on impressive worldbuilding and pulls readers into each dramatic scene. As Rav fights her way into the Illumined Scale school, readers will feel the ache of the cold in their bones and hear the clang of the pitons in their ears. As she moves around the facility, unique architecture, ingrained lore, and impressive ornamentation dazzle, transporting audiences into an unforgettable setting. Backhanded politics dictate the course while cinematic storytelling propels the narrative in the immersive world of A Reckoning of Cinders.
