A flawlessly written and thoughtfully conceived story.
Eric Dundston isn’t exactly down-on-his-luck, but it’s getting more and more difficult for him to pay the rent on time with his freelance reporting jobs. Things take a turn for Eric when he arrives on the scene as a story is unfolding. He takes a quote that includes a coded clue mere moments before a veteran ISS astronaut takes his own life by plunging off the roof of a building. With plenty of connections and his own earnest personality, Eric is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. The clue, which consists of no more than a string of numbers, reveals more than just a government cover up. While the story proves to be a big break for Eric, the real story is what was left behind on the space station.
Neal Thompson writes with a frenetic pace and deft hand. The novel is advanced steadily with Eric’s news articles breaking up the chapters and adding a sense of realism to the storyline. The plot surprises are a nice touch and keep readers fully engaged as the drama unfolds. What begins as a terrific exercise in journalism ends in an unlikely adventure for a man that just wants people to know the truth.
Abandoned: A Sacred Mission is a flawlessly written and thoughtfully conceived story. Neal Thompson captures all the frenzy of the life of a journalist and fuses that passion into an imaginative, out-of-this-world tale.
