Backpacking With Dinosaurs by Doug Goodman

Backpacking With Dinosaurs is not your average dino adventure story. Four high school friends get together to embark on a daring journey many years after graduation. The group, known affectionately as the Granolas, have led mostly unexceptional adult lives. Sadie, the lone success of the group, was bullied relentlessly as a teen. The story moves from their tortured high school days to their law breaking trek into Dinosaur Falls National Park. Without much back story on the once extinct animals, we learn that the park was created in 2020 to protect the dinosaur species created by several genetic companies. Somewhere in the mountains of northern California, the Granolas break into the dangerous park to bond after many years apart. Old wounds are revisited. New courage is found. As it turns out, T-Rex’s aren’t the only predators to be found.

Complex is the best adjective to describe this book. At first glance it is a reckless adventure. But look deeper. It addresses racism and bullying and the associated consequences. It is a narrative on our character and the impact of our choices. The book is exciting and thought provoking. Some parts of the story are told from the unique perspective of the animals. The dialogue is funny and heart-warming. All of us have seen the politics in a high school lunch room, so the story is relatable. The author, Doug Goodman, is not afraid to make big moves to advance the story. Some are touching, others shocking. The book will definitely keep you on your toes! Backpacking With Dinosaurs does justice to an underserved segment of society. The tale will stimulate and inspire. It will thrill and shock. It is a must-read for anybody with a pulse!
