Beyond the God Sea: Betrothed by Elora Morgan

A compelling romance with as much depth and allure as the ocean itself.

Isolated by the surrounding ocean, the island Zaria grew up on is the only world she has ever known. Thus, when a strange boy washes ashore one day, she can’t even imagine where he came from. Keeping his existence a secret, for his safety and hers, Zaria is eager to learn more about the places this boy named Kirwyn claims to have lived. Mainland continents, strange animals, and clans of warring people all seem too far-fetched to believe. But the alternative, that he may be a physical form of the islanders’ god, isn’t a reasonable conclusion either. Zaria must sort her feelings for and trust in Kirwyn before her fate is determined by a ceremonial obligation at the next cycle of the moon.

Elora Morgan skillfully advances the plot and develops the main characters at a metered and realistic pace, adding in more than a few unexpected surprises that are sure to keep readers’ interest throughout. It is charming to see Zaria’s eyes slowly open as she realizes that there is more to life than what she’s grown up with, which is a relatable storyline for many youths as they begin to transition into adulthood. And the inclusion of numerous island-centric aphorisms perfectly complement the lands’ thoroughly conceived history, customs and beliefs. Morgan seamlessly blends a beautiful young adult romance and a convincing dystopian world with a stunning tropical setting. One of the best books in this genre that I’ve read in years, Beyond the God Sea: Betrothed features a compelling romance with as much depth and allure as the ocean itself.
