Cadence to Glory by Mary Dearmon

Williamsburg Virginia provides the sumptuous backdrop for Cadence to Glory. Two wealthy families, The Eton’s and the Parr’s, navigate the tumultuous 1770’s. Priscilla is a self-proclaimed cynic interested in matters weightier than simply mastering the harpsichord. Thomas Eton has radically different political views, but his ambition and idealism have appealed to Priscilla since childhood. Period appropriate drama unfolds among these genteel families, and scandal takes root. Political activism turns to treason and time continues its inexorable march. Love is found and lost, hearts are broken, sacrifices are made, and patience is rewarded.

Cadence to Glory begins at a leisurely pace, treating readers to a glimpse of the indolent life afforded to wealthy families of the day. The story is divided into distinctly different parts. Filled with dynamic and vibrant characters, the pace increases, whisking readers along as the political climate becomes volatile.  I fell in love with the teenaged Priscilla in the first section as she realized her growing affection for Thomas. Her maturation is gratifying as is her loyalty in the face of trials. The book is not without heartbreak, but the conclusion is a sweet sigh of relief.

Like a fine wine, you’ll want to sip slowly and savor every drop of Cadence to Glory. Even Jane Austen would be proud to read this work by Mary Dearmon.
