Dave Walker adds unexpected depth and intrigue to the storyline.
Tera, like all of the inhabitants of Missio, is never without her spark, a glowing counterpart that is widely used in communication. Since sparks disintegrate when the person they associate with dies, it seems like an impossibility when Tera finds a still-living spark by itself. This spark leads her on a mysterious journey that subjects her to numerous unexpected and dangerous situations. She knows that her overbearing father has knowledge of the unaccompanied spark, but she also knows that she can’t get the information that she wants from him. Eventually, a much bigger conspiracy reveals itself and things only get worse for Tera as she finds herself caught up with Garath-Nada, a revolutionary and politician.
What begins as an interesting idea for a simple fantasy world quickly turns into something much bigger. The concept of sparks is flawlessly integrated into the story, and it is fascinating to see how they communicate with their person, with other people, and with other sparks. However, the plot of the book revolves far more around the political intrigues of Missio than sparks. A deft writer, Dave Walker adds unexpected depth and intrigue to the storyline. The City of Sound and Light is a perfect choice for those looking to find their next favorite fantasy book.
