Cold Run by Michael Dault

Ruthless crime families collide in a glistening snow globe setting.

A perilous frozen landscape provides the stunning backdrop for Michael Dault’s Cold Run. The scene opens when a traffic accident turns into a blazing inferno. Fast forward a few years and we meet Cy Ford. Ford isn’t winning any awards for Mr. Congeniality. In fact, his loyal sled dogs are the only kind of company he prefers to keep. But his fellow officers at the Michigan DNR, high-energy Jett and fresh-faced Avery, are as much as Ford could want, or tolerate, as far as human companionship is concerned. Just because Ford likes his privacy doesn’t mean he is afraid of a challenge. In their unique location in the Upper Peninsula, Ford and his team have a dangerous side job ferrying drugs across the border for an arrogant young Canadian drug kingpin. Unwilling to be locked out of his own territory, a notorious Detroit player makes a go for the Canadian’s territory. Ford, Jett and Avery find themselves stuck in the middle of a dangerous game that won’t have any winners. With more on the line than a stash of drug money, Ford proves to be more resourceful than his unexciting employment with the park service might suggest.

Ruthless crime families collide in a glistening snow globe setting in Cold Run by Michael Dault. The well-defined cast features some straight shooters, quite a few scoundrels, and a number of heartless villains. From the dark underbelly of the world of crystal meth runners flush with cash to the hearty people who carve out a home and a life despite a brutal climate, Dault grants vivid insights into some vastly different lifestyles. In a book packed with tense action scenes, the author manages to keep the chaos from overshadowing the dynamic characters. The drug lords are three dimensional, with plenty of interesting backstory to shape their personalities. Upright Officer Anson is the perfect counterweight to the crafty and conflicted Ford, making it a challenge to decide who to root for. And the loyal and obedient sled dogs add a softer note to an otherwise taut and riveting thriller. As stark and unrelenting as the scenery itself, Cold Run offers non-stop thrills that pick up speed until the nerve-racking conclusion.
