Fallible: A Memoir of a Young Physician’s Struggle with Mental Illness by Kyle Bradford Jones

Fallible is a relatable story of a man struggling, but coping with the help of his friends, family, and faith.

Any pre-flight safety briefing on an airplane tells you to first secure your own oxygen mask and then attend to others—because you’re no help to others if you’re dead! For Kyle Jones, he learned this lesson early on in his career. As part of his medical training, Jones found himself working the night shift in a hospital as an intern. When a code blue cruelly shook him from a deep sleep, Jones realized that his immense anxiety and constant stress, exacerbated by prolonged sleep-deprivation, left him in less than optimal conditional to care for a needy patient. This incident is only one of many suggesting the need for change in the nature of medical education and the practice of medicine in our society.

Jones forged ahead with his intensive training and did indeed graduate medical school. But at what cost? Through a litany of therapists and pharmaceutical fixes, Jones really gets at the heart of mental illness. His experience demonstrates “the duality of human nature, the fallibility of us all.” We can accomplish marvelous things, but for many, there is a lurking darkness, a gargoyle so to speak, waiting to pull us down. This is not a story of a man miraculously cured of a malady. Rather, Fallible is a relatable story of a man struggling, but coping with the help of his friends, family, and faith.
