Falling through Stars by Staci Olsen

A gracefully written novel that effectively integrates imaginative mythology.

In a small village where everyone knows everyone, a distinct change in personality is sure to be noticed. And, unfortunately for Ts’ellbah, it might even be viewed as a threat. Ts’ellbah had long been known as a lively young woman that is wild and energetic, regularly doing reckless things like racing her sled dogs too fast. But after a sled crash that could easily have killed her, things are no longer the same for this traumatized woman. In addition to a few physical scars, she is now plagued with forgetfulness, confusion and seizures. While the members of her village want to help her through these challenging times, when Ts’ellbah begins seeing supernatural visions, it may be too much for them to handle. After her first prophetic vision of the death of a village elder comes true, rumors begin to spread and some begin to fear that Ts’ellbah may be possessed by an evil spirit. Ts’ellbah too believes that an evil threat is present, but will have a difficult time convincing the village elders of the true dangers this threat exhibits. Friendships are tried as loyalty and truth are put to the test.

A dramatic opening sequence sets the stage for a thrilling mythological fiction story that centers on themes of acceptance, integrity and identity. The rituals, beliefs and uncommon names within the clan add a unique air of authenticity to the society. And yet, despite the unfamiliar folklore and practices, the story remains grounded through numerous relatable moments of humanity, such as humorous young children and sarcastic older people. The author’s writing skills are showcased through realistic and engaging characters, a striking portrayal of the book’s rural arctic setting and, most notably, the surprising but appropriate conclusion that will no doubt leave many readers stunned. Including a budding romance, the threat of fabled den people and a beautiful connection with the natural world, Olsen’s tale of a girl trying to find her place in the world is one that teens and adults alike are sure to enjoy. A gracefully written novel that effectively integrates imaginative mythology in an approachable manner, Falling through Stars is a fascinating story that ultimately highlights the intrinsic value of humanity.
