Fear Among Us by Bill Stack

Fear Among Us is an intriguing work of historical fiction that begins in 1950. The United States is a few years past World War II and medical advances are increasing at an exciting pace. One thing that modern science and medicine has yet to accomplish, however, is a cure or vaccine for polio. The disease is ravaging the country at an alarming rate and the treatment options are limited. The illness, which affects more boys than girls, leaves these young victims languishing in sterile white hospital beds. The medical staff are frustrated with the lack of progress and the hopelessness of the situation. One compassionate physician, Dr. Bryan Boyle finds a possible solution. With the help of eccentric retired professor Albrecht, Dr. Boyle travels into the future in search for a cure. What he finds in 2050 is both amazing and horrifying.

“It’s hard to believe the future will be so regressive.”

The main character is a compassionate doctor, and the suffering of children fuels Dr. Boyle’s motivation. His sincerity will touch the hearts of readers. Since there is a 100 year time travel element, the historical aspects of the story are really fun to compare side-by-side; clothing styles, technological advances, architecture. While some readers may find the prose a bit awkward at times, the themes of racial and gender equality will hold your attention. The story, while ominous and serious, has a satisfying and comfortable conclusion. Bill Stack has written a chilling tale that truly feels just a few steps from reality. For anybody alive in the 1950’s or familiar with polio’s devastation, Fear Among Us is a must read!
