Feasters: The Circle by Solomon Petchers

A spirited horror story that young adult audiences will devour.

Four teens living in a post-apocalyptic setting deal with challenges within their group while trying to survive the fearsome threats outside. The world that Kieran, Emily, Andrew and Carissa find themselves in is a place where zombie-like creatures, called Feasters, roam the streets looking to sink their teeth into anyone they can. Adding an interesting dynamic to the cast, three of the teens are vampires while the fourth, Carissa, comes from an openly anti-vampire family, and her limited fighting experience is perceived as a liability to the survival of the group. The story is told from Kieran’s point of view as he tries to discern the mysterious messages given to him in his persistent nightmares. When these teens find other living souls inhabiting a building across town, their loyalties are put to the test when they realize who these people really are and what they are trying to accomplish.

Although Feasters: The Circle is a sequel, sufficient information and backstory is shared in its early pages to make it approachable for those who haven’t read the first book in the series. Petchers has done a brilliant job of creating distinct characters, giving each one unique personalities, abilities, and even weapons. Most intriguing is that each vampire has fascinating superhuman abilities, and it is wildly fun to learn how each of their powers play into the arc of the story. The likable cast displays a wide range of emotions, taking on many of the serious threats they face with humor and heart. The lighthearted dialogue balances out the action and suspense as the tension builds steadily with each chapter. New and sometimes shocking developments drive the plot to unexpected places. Solomon Petchers writes in a thoughtful and engaging manner that will appeal to anyone that enjoys reading about zombies or vampires, or that likes testing the limits of their imagination in a frightening post-apocalyptic setting. Featuring a dash of romance, hints of mystery and plenty of suspense, Feasters: The Circle is a spirited horror story that young adult audiences will eagerly devour.
