Odette is a young woman who finds herself in a difficult situation. She fears her husband Grayson and his sister Greer, as they use their magical powers to control, torture and kill. Now pregnant, Odette wants nothing more than to be free from their clutches, even though eluding people with supernatural powers is all but impossible. However, when an opportunity arises for Odette to escape, she can’t help but act on it. With the help of some old friends from her hometown, Felix and Clara, Odette hopes to put on a disappearing act greater than anything that might be found in Grayson and Greer’s magic show.
Right from the start, Odette is a character to root for. She not only finds herself in an impossibly dreadful position in life, but she also is an underdog that has to contend with much stronger foes. Grayson and Greer Mages are well conceived antagonists, as they stay true to their pathologically protective nature. The paranormal aspects of the series, including the Mages’ superhuman servant Thorn and mystical amulets with special powers, are expertly woven into the narrative. Perhaps the feature that adds the most excitement to the storyline is the fact that the author is not afraid to make dramatic and unexpected moves with the characters, constantly keeping the reader on their toes.
