Mile-high gem where excitement and heartbreak mingle.
No stranger to hard work or sacrifice, Tris Miles worked her way through college and ended up with a fulfilling career as an educator. But fulfilling and satisfying are two different things. Never satisfied with the mundane, Tris longed for more. “She had to expand her universe, become a piece of the sky instead of someone who just looked up at it in wonder.” With a love of planes ever since she was a little girl, Tris became a pilot. But not every day is a dream come true in this mile-high gem where excitement and heartbreak mingle. First Officer at a small airline is a fine job, but Tris feels held-back. Whether pride or passion, she needs to become a Captain. A new upscale corporate pilot gig may be her best opportunity for advancement, along with redemption for long-buried mistakes. But being a woman in a male dominated field means that Tris will need more than keen instincts and sharp skills if she hopes to prove herself and keep her wits.
Flygirl by R.D. Kardon is a convincing book about flying written by somebody who has an obvious passion for the skies. The abundance of technical terminology including altimeters, gauges, pressurization and pre-flight checklists, lends credibility and realism to a dynamic story and is a delight for aviation lovers. An important arc to Tris’s story is how a woman facing harassment at every turn maintains her demeanor and her sanity. And a balanced view of affirmative action in action is posed, from both sides of the coin. There is so much high-stakes drama that even the flight simulator scenes will have your heart pumping faster. Narrow mindedness may be more dangerous than heavy turbulence in this motivating adventure story about a brave woman learning to be comfortable with who she truly is.
