A modern twist on the classic tale of swashbuckling pirates.
Have you ever read a book and considered what it would be like to meet the characters in person? Or perhaps wondered what it would be like if you were thrust into the fictional world that they live in? Well, that’s exactly what happens to young Thomas Delaney! At the beginning of the story, Thomas is living a typical middle schooler’s life. Annoying siblings, demanding teachers, and the dreamy girl in his Texas school occupy the bulk of his thoughts. That is, until he is stricken with chicken pox. A high fever and a copy of Treasure Island later, and his hallucinations draw him into the classic novel, reprising the role of the main character Jim Hawkins.
It has been a while since I’ve read Treasure Island, but as far as I can recall the storyline, once Thomas transitions to Jim, closely follows the original plot. The introductory chapters endear readers to the main character, and the final one adds a delightful and enchanting surprise. Whether they have read Treasure Island or not, youths are sure to enjoy reading this modern twist on the classic tale of swashbuckling pirates. Get Out of Bed You Scurvy Dog by Jeanette Maska brings all of the excitement of buccaneers, mutiny and buried treasure to the twenty-first century.
