Glory Bishop is on the threshold of womanhood. She wants to please her mama and her lord. But sometimes, you just gotta do you! When her boyfriend heads off for three years of military service, Glory ends up in a relationship with a “good boy”, the son of their preacher. This man, a decade older than Glory, begins a courtship and everything seems perfect; except to Glory it’s all wrong. Glory suffers abuse on multiple fronts all under the guise of religion. The story is about the evolution of Glory, her maturation, her growth, her trials, her coming-of-age, and her breaking free.

If you enjoy complex characters, you’ll love this book. From a zealous and abusive mother to a free-spirited best friend much older than Glory, the cast is as engrossing as Glory herself. Deborah King maintains complete control of the narrative, manipulating perception of the characters even as their actions go in other directions. In some ways, you may even find yourself sympathizing with the violent boyfriend. Deborah King wields the pen in such a way as to grab you buy the wrist and pull you along like you’re best friends. Glory Bishop is Chicago’s answer to Judy Blume!
