When Tay is born, Deja’s family, and her role in it, change. As a new big sister, she is given a present. Her gift is none other than a shirt and cape that make her a Super Big Sister! This new costume helps her to realize that she has the power to fulfill her new responsibility of taking care of her baby brother.
A highlight of this picture book is the artwork. It is colorful, consistent, and expresses the emotions of the characters well. The dialogue is well written and would be fun to read to a small child. The only negative comment I can think to offer is that the story ended too abruptly. It would have been great to see another example or two of Deja’s new ‘super powers’ before it ended. However, there are indications that the Super Big series will continue with a series of follow-up books. The Super Big series is perfect reading for children who have recently become a big brother or sister. The story in Hey Baby is simple but heuristic, and the combination of expressive dialogue and vibrant artwork is sure to keep any child’s attention. Lucy Sams and Jolenna Mapes have joined forces to create a series that should be on every child’s bookshelf!
