Hybrids, Volume One: Trouble by Jennie Dorny

Imagine diving into the deepest blue ocean and receiving a head full of thoughts from a nearby whale. Or closing your eyes to sleep and the dreams seen are shared with those in your community. And hasn’t every child at one time fantasized about living in an underwater home complete with portholes, rounded walls and seaweed decorations? All of this beautiful imagery fills the pages of Trouble, the first installment in the Hybrids series.

A complex collection of characters vie for space in this intricate novel. Foremost is Theo Maddiogga. Theo needs a home, she could use some guidance, she seeks approval, but most of all Theo craves personal relationships, even if she is reluctant to recognize this about herself. Theo’s telepathic abilities prove to be a blessing and a curse, putting herself and those around her in danger. Also intriguing is Mocean, the sentient form of the ocean. Mocean’s connection with its inhabitants is reminiscent of an emotional mother’s relationship with her sometimes wayward children; there is tumult, comfort, balance, and love. The novel is laden with heavy exposition describing otherwise simple ideas and creatures. It takes a while to become acquainted with the verbiage, making the glossary in the front of the book indispensable!

Hybrids takes place in a unique sci-fi world filled with ideas and norms common to humans. Jennie Dorny writes a delightful story shimmering with the beauty of possibility.
