Hybrids, Volume Two Vengeance by Jennie Dorny

“Why do we feel the necessity to change? We invent a form of danger to deepen our reflection about who we are.”

Hybrids, Volume Two: Vengeance moves on seamlessly from the first book in the series. The action begins immediately with Theo and Jack hurtling through space in a crowded transport ship. Jack and his husband Farren have come up with a plan to keep Theo off the radar of those hunting her. Everything goes as planned until Farren turns up dead, with Jack as the prime suspect. Intense loyalty spurs Theo to save Jack and bring the truth to light. Elsewhere in the galaxy, on oceanic Eridan, a coup has been launched against its rulers, threatening the peace and well-being of the planet. Revenge is the order of the day and even family ties can’t stop the bloodshed.

Jennie Dorny has a vast imagination and a precious gift in the ability to paint an exquisite picture with words. The creatures come to life and the vivid locations dance from the pages in this epic fantasy. Since the hard work of world building was accomplished in book one, Vengeance is able to flesh out more of the plot, including power-grabs, cover-ups, and character growth laden with introspection.  Although the heavy themes of gender fluidity and sexuality come across as forced in places, the resounding feeling of love is what most readers will come away with. Hybrids, Volume Two: Vengeance is a whimsical and deeply philosophical fiction novel that proves that a sequel can be even better than the first!
