Historically, for an author to make writing their career, getting signed by a book publishing company was their only option. In recent decades, however, the market has shifted to allow many self-published authors to make an occupation out of writing. Despite the numerous opportunities available today for self-published authors, many still strive for the goal of getting published, and understandably so, as joining a book publisher has its benefits. For one thing, it adds credibility to a career that people might view as simply a hobby. Additionally, many book publishers have connections, resources, and marketing tools that self-published authors may not otherwise have access to. But if you choose to pursue getting published through a book publishing company, you will want to make sure that the benefits outweigh the costs, as not all publishers have authors’ best interests in mind. When perusing our list of over two hundred independent publishers, keep in mind that some companies may not be a great fit for you, a few of them may require you to submit through an agent, and still others may not be accepting submissions at all at this time. Whether you seek out and are accepted by a book publisher or you decide to self-publish your book, in order to become successful as an independent author, you will need a combination of persistence, talent, and hard work.
