In a future where food is produced via a 3-D printer-cooker and space travel is not uncommon, a young girl becomes the center of an intergalactic prognostication. A visitor from the planet Kryg gives twelve-year-old Sam a device that enables her to travel to their planet, where she finds out about a prophecy that indicates that she is to be their queen, and that she alone can save both the planet Kryg and her home planet, Earth. As if that weren’t enough for Sam to deal with, she also begins attending a new school and attracts the unwanted attention of an evil mega-corporation. Will Sam be able to handle all this pressure while fulfilling her role in the prophecy by finding the Hopewell Star?
The similarities between the futuristic setting in this novel and our day are obvious. From corporations underhandedly destroying the Earth to school bullies that pick on their peers, there are many facets of this book that are easy to relate to. Young readers interested in science fiction will enjoy the fantastical elements of the story, while all readers are sure to appreciate the comradery between Sam and the friends that she finds at her new school. Throughout the story, Sam faces seemingly insurmountable obstacles with relative ease, and she is frequently given opposing information and must decide who she should trust, which fuels a sense of mystery in the reading. Hannah D. State’s debut novel is well-plotted, and is filled with imaginative characters, locations, and plot developments.
