Max Goes to Town by Cynthia L. Clark

The perfect rhyming story to help young children just starting to read.

Max Goes to Town pairs the innocence and charm of a book written for children with the authenticity of a true story, Cynthia L. Clark breaks from her more suspenseful novelization to a genre where the feeling and plot of an entire story is captured on just a few pages. The story is about a scruffy family cat named Max who always seems to have something up his sleeve. One day when the family heads into town for burgers and shakes, Max, unbeknownst to them, hitches a ride and takes a little field trip. Unconcerned about the danger, Max refuses to change his wily ways and tries to stow away again, the very next week. Even without much dialogue, the bubbly personalities and childlike innocence of the two sisters dance from the pages, as does Max’s ornery nature.

Short and sweet, Max Goes to Town is the perfect rhyming story to help young children just starting to read. The text is uncomplicated, with a pleasant flow and an even pace. The artwork is the perfect companion to the story with a simple watercolor painting feel that warmly invites readers to Max’s home and town. Max is such a typical family cat, always getting into one thing or another, that cat lovers will delight in his antics. I love the concerned interaction between Max and the two little girls after they recover him from the hood of the truck. They scold the cat and worry over him, but aloof as ever, he looks at them smugly and turns away, no doubt plotting his next caper. And the darling little mouse that keeps popping up is like a happy little treasure, with its big, expressive eyes. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy a truly relatable story, Max Goes to Town is a cheery warm fuzzy written personally for young readers.
