Mermaids Don’t Wear Floaties by Rachelle Jones Smith

Almost too cute to handle.

Can you remember the first time you jumped into the deep end of the pool all by yourself? That feeling of relinquishing the safety and security of the arms of an adult and ditching the reassuring pressure of inflatable arm bands to keep your head above water is exactly the dilemma Morah is staring down. A fun day at the pool turns into a true test of courage after Morah is teased, “Mermaids don’t wear floaties!” She tries to brush off the comment, splashing and playing with her floaties securely in place. Even with the helpful lifeguard’s reassurance, Morah keeps the floaties, sure she’ll drown without them. Her mom tries to help as her brother flaunts his aquatic skills, but still Morah resists, until she sees a gleeful boy jump confidently into the deep water. The young girl imagines herself playing freely as the mermaid she was destined to become and decides to do the best she can.

Mermaids Don’t Wear Floaties is the ideal story for kids who might be a tad scared of the water. Almost too cute to handle, it’s clear that Morah is a handful! Her adorable pouty face, fierce determination and vivid imagination will speak to parents and kids alike. The simple story addresses a big moment in the lives of growing children, that first scary plunge. Morah’s reactions are so real, so authentic, it’s as though I were seeing my younger self on the page. My favorite image is of her totally supportive and beautiful mama beckoning Morah into the water. But as with so many decisions, removing the floaties is a personal choice that can really only be made by Morah when she is ready. The crisp, clear illustrations only enhance this delightful book. Expressive and colorful, Morah’s adventure in Mermaids Don’t Wear Floaties is as fun to read as it is to look at.
