Mira’s Griffin by Christie Valentine Powell

Young Mira is an adventurous girl with a loving family. She is a bit of a loner and just doesn’t quite fit in with the other girls her age. She prefers the solitude of climbing and foraging to the mundane talk of her gossipy teenaged peers. Her freedom is hindered by the mysterious Threat lurking around her village. Soon Mira comes face-to-face with the Threat. She finds herself enslaved in a vale far from home. It is guarded by a group of Griffin with seemingly human-like personalities. Mira has to decide what she’s willing to risk to gain her freedom.

Mira’s Griffin is a heartwarming story. The unlikely heroine is young, but mature beyond her years. The author does a nice job keeping the story light while addressing some heavy themes such as the separation of families and slavery. The fictional world is unique and imaginative. The characters feel a little one-dimensional at times but their new abilities keep the reader engaged. The original cover art really captures your attention and shapes your view of the griffins and of Mira herself. It is a charming book full of heart, perfect for middle grade, young adult, or anybody interested in an interesting twist on a fantasy tale.
