If you choose to judge a book by its cover, Of Reality and Dream: Tales for Underground is an amazing read. If you choose to judge a book by its content, Of Reality and Dream: Tales for Underground certainly holds up under scrutiny! Although conceived when the author was but a boy, the ramblings come together in a unique and insightful way. The group of stories includes musings on life, including futility and human mortality, and even a jaunt into the fantastical. The pages flow like poetry, one into the next, leading readers to unexpected places.
Regarding pointless books, one of the characters, Giovanni Rosselli in The Book, lamented, “Poor tree, what a horrible end. It would have been more honorable to turn into a thousand soft sheets of bath tissue.” And haven’t we all grabbed a book like that? Not so with this quirky collection of stories. The ideas aren’t all overt or even necessarily clear. Much of Loredano Cafaro’s work is like an Alfred Hitchcock film where you can hear the screams and the suspenseful music, but the fright is derived within the minds of the viewers, left to imagine the horrors in their own ways. Similarly, readers will get out of this anthology as much as they dare imagine. Of Reality and Dream: Tales for Underground is unexpectedly insightful and surprisingly poignant.
