Section Roads by Mike Murphey

Mike Murphey is a true wordsmith with a keen sense of humor and deep insight.

A high school reunion coupled with the death of an elderly parent serves as the catalyst to reconnect some old friends. Cullen became a lawyer but could never quite get the timing right in his relationship with the lovely Shelby. Buddy Boyd was an aspiring athlete that made the bold choice to befriend band nerds Cullen and Shelby. Under the influence of alcohol and bad friends, Buddy made a poor choice that still haunts him 40 years later, despite his wildly successful tech career. The small town of Arthur sits between Roswell and Amarillo, and the folks in Arthur are both slow to embrace change and quick to judge. So when a murder happens while they are all in town, Buddy becomes the prime suspect and his friends must come together to help him.

Section Roads is a compelling book filled with realistic and entertaining situations. It seems like everybody went to school with a kid that had an unfortunate name like ‘Weard Ward’ or was forced to drive a giant pink car on a date to ensure chastity. Despite the plot revolving around murder, the narrative is endlessly funny. Young Cullen was “glad he’d gotten contact lenses… trying to French kiss with two pairs of glasses involved could invite some sort of optical disaster.” A cringe-worthy vision, but totally how it was in school!
