SkyRacers by Matt Watters

A turbocharged adventure fueled by sibling rivalry, angsty athletes, and unadulterated adrenaline.

“This is the first time siblings have flown against each other in a SkyRace GP. We will witness history. Two sisters, two pilots in excellent form, flying against each other, representing the top teams on points. What more could we ask for?” What more, indeed! Aleeza and Olivia Martin are graduates of the SkyRace Pilot Academy. These fierce women are shrewd and competitive, both on and off the course. The two are at the top of their game, but in SkyRace Grand Prix, only one can be the best. The reigning world champion, Aleeza, holds the team that has boosted her career in high esteem. SkyRace GP is a team sport, after all, and McRory Racing is her team. For Olivia, however, the only thing that eclipses her skill in the sky is an intense drive for success. Even more than she craves family, community, or team camaraderie, Olivia is possessed with the need to win. When opportunity comes knocking, Olivia doesn’t think twice about ditching team McRory to advance her career. Across several globe-spanning events, the sisters are pitted against each other in a race to the top of the leaderboard. Competition collides with familial bonds in a story where more than a trophy is on the line.

They say that blood is thicker than water. But is it thicker than jet fuel? That is the question that Aleeza and Olivia Martin repeatedly confront as these two disparate sisters dominate a dangerous, velocious sport. How these women handle betrayal, stress, defeat, and victory will demonstrate exactly how much or little they have in common and how tightly family ties bind. Although the futuristic electric racepods in Matt Watters’s near-future novella don’t run on kerosene, they certainly excite audiences as they zip through the air at breakneck speeds. Readers are offered the best seats in the house in a narrative powered by aerial excitement and pulse-pounding close calls. Meticulously described rotocraft octocopters and state-of-the-art accompaniments will appeal to gearheads while evolved societal ideals and fiery relationship turmoil makes the story approachable for a wide audience. However, as the action, conflict, and anticipation continue to build inside the cockpit, ancillary character development takes a less powerful role. With so much excitement in so few words, you’ll feel like you’re in the freefall part of an epic skydive and the parachute won’t open until the very last moment. A frenzied novella that is only a small part of a larger whole, SkyRacers is a turbocharged adventure fueled by sibling rivalry, angsty athletes, and unadulterated adrenaline.
