Survive the Cursed by Ashton Abbott

A dark and addictive novel that will leave you lusting for more.

When the worst has happened, what memory will you treasure most? For Avery Winters, it’s cartoons and sugary breakfast cereal on a typical Saturday morning, enjoyed within the safety of her childhood home. But there’s little time for nostalgia when the planet has been overrun by savage bands of flesh-feasting supernaturals. Brutal choices have to be made at the world’s end, and for the last decade, Avery has been training to fight evil enemies and make those tough decisions. Sheltering in what was a pre-fall military base, Avery, her parents, and a diminishing group of survivors do what they need to in order to fend off the single-minded zombies, towering werewolves, vindictive witches, and cunning vampires that hunt them. Her father’s scientific and medical research has given the rugged survivors insights into the provocations and weaknesses of the monsters. Though his methods are merciless, so are the deadly creatures. Resources dwindle and anger spikes among the human population as the years pass. Getting more desperate by the day, humanity will have to get creative if they are to gain footing against these unrelenting foes. But in this wrecked version of Earth where malicious monsters dominate the planet, Avery will discover that evil doesn’t always come with claws, curses, fangs, or fur.

As fun as catching the first midnight showing of a new blockbuster movie, diving into Survive the Cursed offers everything beloved from monster fiction and adds in a saucy protagonist with enough attitude to take on the whole world. However, just because the author includes well-known concepts as the foundation for the harrowing plot, don’t assume you know where this unpredictable story is going! Time-worn villains are given fresh characteristics and sinister motivations while the resilient human fighters combine proven methods with ingenious new strategies to battle their enemies. An interesting young woman, Avery begins as an unpalatable, closed off character, one that can be difficult to connect with. Her narrative voice is terse and cynical, giving readers a taste of her inner turmoil and the perpetual angst the survivors feel. But as the plot evolves and Avery’s eyes are opened to the terrifying truths around her, she becomes a character to root for, a hero whose story you’ll want to keep following, no matter how dark the path. A handful of pesky grammatical errors appear in the text, but these won’t keep readers from becoming completely absorbed in Avery’s gritty, dystopian reality. A wild, nightmarish ride, Survive the Cursed is a dark and addictive novel that will leave you lusting for more.
