The First Lie by N.H. Steele

Sassy and suspenseful, The First Lie will hook you on page one.

Practically still a blissful newlywed, Olivia Hart couldn’t be happier with her life. She has a new job as a junior accountant at Sterling Enterprises where her doting husband works just a few floors below. With promotions on the horizon and plans for children in the future, the Harts have everything they want. At least, they thought they did. An ordinary audit of Sterling’s accounts turns up some irreconcilable figures, a task Olivia is equipped to handle. When these persistent financial discrepancies gain the attention of the company’s vice president, Ethan Sterling, Olivia finds herself in a vulnerable position. Not for her brief tenure on the job, but for her inexperience with a man accustomed to getting everything he wants. And the moment Ethan meets Olivia, he knows he wants her. With stunning good looks and a bank account with almost too many zeroes to count, the city’s most eligible bachelor would be a prize for nearly any woman. But Olivia isn’t just another vapid supermodel looking for a lavish suitor. She’s already married, and that’s an exciting challenge for an arrogant, formidable, relentless man like Ethan. Unfortunately for Olivia, she doesn’t recognize his intentions for what they are, and her naivety will cost her and her family, one way or another.

Sassy and suspenseful, The First Lie will hook you on page one, pull you along until the dramatic climax, and leave you on pins and needles for a sequel that teases something more dangerous than Ethan’s obsession. Ethan’s character is self-centered, egotistical, and deliciously villainous, yet marvelously balanced by his strong family ties and devotion. And Olivia and Daniel Hart are the perfect sympathetic couple with a bright future ahead of them. Olivia is highly relatable in her idealism and tendency to see the good in every situation. At first, when she falls into Ethan’s games, it’s easy to understand her choices. She takes the path of least resistance, reasoning that it’s a condition of her job. But when the truth can no longer be ignored and she is backed into several corners, her desperation is brilliantly depicted. Readers will keenly feel the Harts’ marital tension and contemplate the complexities of this wildly implausible situation as if the choices and consequences were their own. Your emotions will take a beating as the couple struggles with trust, but the pain is worth the fun in the extremely engaging novel, The First Lie.
