The Hollow Rigors of Gnome by Ashley Parker Owens

A modern fairy tale that triumphs liberty over oppression.

Among a clan of gardeners, Og stands out like a sore thumb rather than a gnome with a green thumb. While the others are skilled horticulturists, mechanically inclined Og would rather spend his time figuring out how tools work than using them to cultivate the soil. Due to a pact forged with the ogres, one that keeps the gnomes safe so long as they continue to produce food from the earth, Og’s unusual proclivity could be a serious detriment to him. Thus, he welcomes an assignment that allows him to make better use of his unique skills, even if it means leaving behind his family, friends, pet, and everything else he has ever known. At his new position, the curious gnome learns shocking and disturbing things about the ogres in charge. But his situation also allows him to effect a real change for the better. Does Og have the courage to expose the truth, especially when doing so threatens the delicate balance that has long-existed between these two species?

Providing a satirical representation of many problems that we face in today’s world, this fantasy story will not only entertain, but will also make you think about important topics. Themes of fitting in, subjugation, recreational drug use, GMOs, and the balance between technology and nature are all blended together into a dark tale that pits ogres against gnomes. The gnomes themselves may be difficult characters to relate to, but Og’s story is a compelling one to follow and it is certainly rewarding to see his growth. The author features a number of strong elements in the storyline to keep readers interested throughout, including the role of magic in gnome culture, the enigmatic half-ogre Gheer, and the uncovering of a few horrific truths. Parker has done a wonderful job of creating a rich fantasy world with authentic societal conventions. The Hollow Rigors of Gnome is more than a fantastical story about gnomes and ogres, it is a modern dark fairy tale that exalts liberty over oppression and highlights the value of standing up for truth.
