David Bernstein has written a book that both delights and entertains!
Anyone who has ever taken a family vacation to the beach will relate to this book. Right from the start, it will fill your mind and heart with all of the excitement and emotions that arise from those memories, and this feeling continues until the final pages. The King of Pawleys, however, is far more than a simple vacation story. During the first night on Pawleys Island, Peter and his brother become the sole witnesses of an altercation that leaves their neighbor badly injured. With the help of their bold new friend Ali, they begin a sleuth-like operation to discover who the miscreant is that is tormenting their favorite vacation spot. Is it the three older boys that are staying at a house down the beach from them? Could it be the bully that had been there in past years? Or might it just be the Gray Man, the reputed ghost that haunts Pawleys Island?
David Bernstein does a nice job of developing the friendship that forms between the main characters, Peter and Ali. When they first meet, they seem very different: Peter starts out shy, which is contrasted with Ali’s boldness. But the necessity that they feel to find the person causing trouble on their island quickly develops into an inseparable bond between the two of them. The King of Pawleys is an excellent read, not just for juvenile readers but for anyone that wants to reminisce about their beach vacations. The mystery in this book brings just enough intrigue to keep your interest throughout the story. David Bernstein has written a book that both delights and entertains!
