J.S. Matthews masterfully blends western and dystopia into a dust storm of fictional delight.
What happens when power-hungry governments finally launch nuclear weapons and wipe out nearly ninety percent of the world’s people? We revert back to the gun slinging fun that is the Wild West! What was once the United States is now divided into two major factions and several lawless groups in between. In this gritty post-apocalyptic western, horse riding Marshals carry out the rule of law. A group of Marshals convene to track down the notorious criminal Wesley Kerrigan. Kerrigan was long thought dead until a couple of officials are killed in a saloon after a dangerous piece of Old World tech comes up stolen. A group of Marshals including Elizabeth Hart, one of the best marksmen around, teams up with Kerrigan’s former partner in crime to track him down before it’s too late.
Left to rebuild in a harsh environment, the author deftly describes a land that is ravaged by massive dust storms, blistering heat, and pockets of radiation left from the war. The bandits and tribals are as dangerous as the landscape. The Marshal grants an exciting look at a western that includes a bold young female lead trying to solidify her place in a male dominated line of work.
With an abundance of action and old-school shoot-outs, The Marshal makes it fun to take a step forward and back in time. J.S. Matthews masterfully blends western and dystopia into a dust storm of fictional delight.
