The Old Lady and Her Unwanted Guests by Ali Shasti

A sunny day gives way to a stormy night in a charming little village. This particular village is home to a kind old lady who enjoys chatting with her neighbors. Something about the old lady makes everyone, especially children, feel happy and cared for. So when a cow knocks at her door, hoping to find shelter from the pouring rain, it’s no surprise she invites the wet cow inside. Even though she is cold and tired, the woman offers the cow a blanket and a lovely spot to spend the night. But before either can get to sleep, there is another knock. This time, it’s Mr. Donkey. And he isn’t the only animal facing the elements. A dog, a cat, birds, and a chicken are looking for a way to stay dry and warm. And every time, the kindly woman invites the critters in for shelter. The crowded home is filled with animals relieved to have found such a selfless person to take them in for the night. The next morning, the animals are reluctant to leave. The woman’s home isn’t large enough for them all, so how will she choose who stays and who goes?

A sweet book about found family, The Old Lady and Her Unwanted Guests is a picture book that warms the heart and stirs the soul. Obviously, children will adore the straightforward story about a tiny home filled with colorful animals. Yet, subtly complex ideas lend themselves to heartfelt conversations with young readers. What does it mean to give away warmth and kindness? Why might the elderly lady have only one oil lamp? How can these animals be considered family to the woman? By placing the cheerful artwork opposite the text, the book creates a deliberate pause to enjoy the scenes while feeling the impact of the story. The title may call them unwanted guests, but the illustrations radiate joy, even as the woman is kept from her much-needed rest. While the story is endearing, several production and editorial inconsistencies keep the book from feeling fully refined, with issues ranging from spelling and grammar errors to images that are inconsistent and don’t cleanly align with the text. Most children won’t remember these glitches, but they will remember the soothing storytelling. A tale about generosity, community, and the unexpected bonds that form when we give to others, The Old Lady and Her Unwanted Guests is a tender picture book that is sure to leave young readers feeling comforted and cared for.
