THE PVRITAN by Birgitte Märgen

A sure favorite for fans of James Patterson.

Detective Marti Zucco is dedicated to her job solving homicide cases in Boston. With the job comes gruelingly long hours, heartbreaking meetings with bereft loved ones and contact with some rather unsavory people, all in hopes of solving the crime at hand. When Marti and her partner investigate the murder of a known gang member, the crime seems fairly straightforward. That is, until they see the wings carved from the flesh of the victim. And the bizarre page taken from an antique Bible lodged in the victim’s eye socket. With more flair than the typical gang hits, Marti can’t shake the unusual nature of this brutal murder. When a mutilated body is pulled from beneath the ice of a pond weeks later, the similarities, including wings and scriptures, tie these two brutal crimes together. Before long, the murders hit closer to home and Marti realizes that the clock is ticking to find the killer before she becomes the next victim.

THE PVRITAN is an intense thriller with a frenetic pace set in Boston, with a side story snaking its way throughout the 1600s. The novel is graphic and gruesome, but typical for this kind of gripping detective novel. I love that the lead detective is a strong, independent woman without making the story revolve around her gender. Instead, the story fans the flames of religious abuse throughout the centuries and includes some demented devices used to administer discipline in the past, but considered torture devices by today’s standards, which really increase the creepiness factor. The action is pulse-pounding and the author is not afraid to take risks with the plot. Get ready to devote a sleepless night to Birgitte Märgen’s gripping thriller THE PVRITAN, a sure favorite for fans of James Patterson.
