Toward a Model of Constitutions by Williams Kuttikadan

Fascinating and thought-provoking.

About half of the world’s population lives in some form of a democracy. But how many of us actually understand the constitutional principles that govern our societies? Comprehending such an extensive subject may seem a daunting task, relegated to legislators and scholars, but with Kuttikadan’s Toward a Model of Constitutions as a guide, this hefty topic becomes surprisingly approachable to those with a desire to understand the fundamental concepts of democratic structure. Though many of the terms and considerations will be unfamiliar to those uninitiated, the glossary at the end of the book will prove invaluable, and visual learners will benefit greatly from the simple diagrams and tables that are scattered throughout the chapters, accurately depicting the well-organized information. Broadly basing a model of constitutions on human rights and liberty, the opening chapter lays a solid foundation for the book. However, this basis is quickly expanded upon as the author considers such varied but intrinsically related topics as separation of powers, rule of law, community expectations, monetary systems, religion, and the response to external factors like climate crises, to name just a few.

It is evident from the first pages that Toward a Model of Constitutions is highly methodical in its presentation, and this logical structuring of content continues throughout the book. The analytical format and development of information makes for a composition that is straightforward and easy to follow, simplifying such a weighty topic. Additionally, though the exposition is well-researched and reasoned, the author doesn’t allow his expertise to limit the advancement of the model, readily admitting that many aspects of democratic structure could still be explored in greater detail. As a reader with only a modest interest in politics and a limited understanding of the supreme law that frames the government where I live, I found Kuttikadan’s book to be both relevant and enlightening. But to those who possess a greater passion for the inner workings of democratic constitutions, this work of nonfiction is sure to be even more fascinating and thought-provoking. A masterclass in the basics of constitutional framework, Toward a Model of Constitutions provides inquisitive readers with an in-depth understanding of the considerations involved in forming a thriving democratic governance.
