Why Me, Mama? by Katherine Lockwood

Thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated.

Growing up is challenging, but growing up with a disability adds an even heavier burden to our children. Why Me, Mama? is a meaningful book that helps normalize disabilities while offering comfort to kids of all sorts. Rose is having a party, but this sweet little owl is too upset to get excited. Her loving mama asks what is bothering young Rose. Distressed by what makes her different from her friends, she laments, “I’m afraid my friends won’t want to come to my party. Why am I different, Mama?” True, there are things that set Rose apart from other animals in the park; her beautiful feathered face doesn’t move the same as her friends. Rose’s mama points out that many of us are different in a variety of ways, some of which can be seen and others that cannot. But that doesn’t make us less valuable, lovable, or special. So Rose and her mama take the time to invite her friends to the party. Learning more about the unique park animals teaches Rose that our differences can be more than just the disability we’re labeled with. They can embolden us, strengthen us, and help us learn to care for each other even more!

Thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated, this inviting picture book is perfect for children that struggle with anything that makes them feel different. Disabilities come in every shape and size, and Katherine Lockwood does a wonderful job of reassuring children that no matter how we feel on the inside or look on the outside, we are still amazing. The approachable story is paired with warm artwork that will touch your heart. You know you’re in for an emotional story as soon as you meet Lorelai, a hedgehog fixed with a trach tube, but this story is by no means sad. Alongside pink-cheeked Rose, readers will leave with a sense of hope and optimism, even through a variety of challenging conditions. Whether physical, mental, sensory, temporary, or lifelong, disabilities are apparent but not defining for all these lovable critters. Sweet, heartening, and filled with the cutest animals you’ve ever seen, Why Me, Mama? is a wonderful storybook that will stimulate and embolden young readers to embrace their differences.
