The plight of orphans is a topic that, although serious and troubling, is often overlooked. An Orphan’s Rapbook brings the subject to light in a very clear and direct manner. The emotional range of sentiments that might go through an orphan’s mind, including the topics of injustice and feeling unloved, are clearly conveyed in believable terms.
It is difficult to read these poems without developing strong feelings of compassion toward the sad situation that many orphans find themselves in. The thoughts are concise, the writing is laconic, and the rhymes are somewhat juvenile. This style of writing, while in most contexts considered amateurish, works well in this case as it is expressing the thoughts of a child. In fact, you could mistakenly believe that many of the poems are actually taken directly from a youth’s journal.
Dhruv Gupta brings attention to a profoundly important situation facing the children of our world. An Orphan’s Rapbook is an impactful and touching look into the mind of a parentless child.
