Beyond the Sky’s Edge by Pat Wahler

A soaring tribute to every dreamer who ever looked up and decided the sky was only the beginning.

It is 1912, and Olivia Newcomb has just stepped out of boarding school into a world full of promise, provided she is willing to follow the paths society dictates. Unfortunately, she isn’t ready to settle into the expected role of wife and mother, and most women’s work doesn’t appeal to someone so keen to chase horizons. Though her best friend and would-be suitor, Leonard, wishes she would change her mind, Livvie can’t be stopped from following her untamed spirit. After an enlightening trip to Kansas City, her heart’s truest desire becomes clear: she wants to fly. And not just a quick trip in a flying balloon. Livvie wants to train to become an aviatrix. In a society that scarcely imagines women at the helm of such a powerful machine, reaching the cockpit will demand more than courage. Leonard and her parents want her to choose the safe path, but she learns that even the straightest roads can turn treacherous without warning. After a devastating blow to her family, Livvie finds herself making some difficult decisions. Flying feels like freedom, but duty keeps her close to the ground. Will she ever be able to let her dreams soar?

A riveting family drama set in a world teetering on the edge of old and new, Beyond the Sky’s Edge is a touching story of adventure, ambition, and dogged determination. Pat Wahler has done an amazing job with historical research, firmly planting the story in the early twentieth century. Whether Livvie is politely insisting she isn’t too hysterical to fly or wrestling her long skirts away from the controls, every scene underscores the constraints placed on a self‑minded woman of the era. The plot offers a few welcome twists and a petty antagonist, but the novel’s greatest strength lies in its believably drawn characters, especially Livvie. Her admiration for Harriet Quimby and the grief she feels at Quimby’s death not only reveal her adventurous spirit but also remind readers that her journey unfolds against the backdrop of real historical events. Relationships with her mother and father feel authentic, and the bond with her younger sister drives some of the novel’s most heartfelt moments, giving the narrative an emotional lift. And for the romantics at heart, a soft bloom of love rises amid the turbulence, never competing with Livvie’s personal arc, but complementing her journey. Gentle but firm, empathetic but clear‑eyed, Beyond the Sky’s Edge is a soaring tribute to every dreamer who ever looked up and decided the sky was only the beginning.
