Breaking Through To You by Alyssa Milani

If Ophelia Jones can’t find a decent, datable guy, how does everyone else manage to do it? Maybe her good looks intimidate men. Perhaps her overflowing confidence is offputting to those who aren’t quite as self-assured. Or it could be that her spicy personality is just too hot for most guys to handle. Regardless of the reason, the truth is that being stood up for a blind date is no fun and Ophelia is fed up with men. Still, when chivalrous Treyton Spencer storms into her life, Ophelia can’t believe her luck. Treyton is funny, handsome, knows his way around the kitchen, and has a way of making her feel like she’s the center of the universe. He might be the perfect boyfriend, except Treyton doesn’t believe in titled relationships. One-night stands? Sure. Friends with benefits? Even better. But commitments with girls that can break your heart are out of the question for this charismatic guy. Ophelia is tired of games, so friendship will have to do, even if their mutual attraction is hotter than the surface of the sun. To distract herself, Ophelia takes up with the blind date that blew her off. Sure, Henry is easy on the eyes and great in bed, but that’s about it for his list of endearing qualities. He’s a mistake and Ophelia knows it, but if she can’t have Trenton, she’ll double down on this consolation prize until it breaks her. After all, being with the wrong guy is better than being alone, right?

If you’ve ever been stuck in a loop of bad decisions in pursuit of your happy ending, then you’ll feel an immediate connection to Ophelia. She’s tough on the outside, hesitant to let anyone in for fear of what might happen. Yet her vulnerability and desire for connection keep her open to new relationships, both toxic and beautiful. Treyton is a terrific character, written with humor, charm, and loyalty. Despite all the obstacles, their relationship is passionate and enviable, even if their story arc is predictable. Throughout this sexually charged novel, the dialogue is modern, fresh, and believable for a younger adult audience. As for Ophelia’s second-choice boyfriend, Henry, the author crafts him in a frighteningly realistic manner. From his smooth-talking personality to his pathetic apologies, readers will form strong opinions about this increasingly manipulative character. Tender in all the right places but steamy enough that you’ll need to crank up the A/C, Breaking Through To You is an emotional story that will leave you wondering whether friends make the best lovers.
