Sam Binks lives with his grandmother in a lighthouse on Silver Moon Cove. Despite his young age, the eight year old takes his responsibility of protecting Granny from pirates very seriously. Although, since there have never been pirates in his lifetime, the threat of them arriving on Silver Moon Cove doesn’t seem likely. When Sam does spot a pirate ship on the horizon one day, he recruits his friend Melody to protect his home. The pirates, however, aren’t exactly the swashbucklers that he expects them to be.

The concept of an elderly pirate gang is superbly described, adding a lot of humor to the story. The plot, characters and writing style are all very appropriate for early readers. Certainly, any children interested in pirates would enjoy Captain Fat Beard. Additionally, in the course of the tale multiple characters face their fears, which is a nice learning point for many youths. The story culminates in an exciting geriatric pirate battle that takes place right on the beach in front of Sam’s house, and by means of the pirates he learns a lot about himself. Captain Fat Beard and the Pickled Onion Pirate Battle is a fun and adventurous read that is sure to entertain young readers.
