A perfect balance of fantasy, suspense, excitement and fun!
High school is the greatest time of your life… if you’re part of the ‘in’ crowd. Allison Lee, however, does not enjoy that magnanimous designation. But what she lacks in popularity, she makes up for in loyal friends and a promising career in photojournalism. Still, the derision and bullying can be a tough storm to weather for a perceptive and sensitive sixteen year old. A poignant picture of a homeless Vet seems to be the beginning of a change in her life. Winning a meaningful photography award feels like vindication, but Allison’s moment in the sun is cut short when she is brutally attacked while searching for a friend. The crime leaves her blind and devastated, with no memory of the attacker and very few options. A radical procedure promises to help with her vision, but the side-effects might be more than any human can handle.
Dragons Walk Among Us is a satisfying story about a girl finding her way in a world that isn’t quite what she thought it was. Allison has all the spirit of a person ready to fix any injustices she sees, including major social issues like racism or climate change. There is so much drama wound into the first quarter of the book that, even though you know it’s going to happen, it still comes as a surprise when Allison realizes she can see dragons. And dragons are just a small piece of the grand puzzle. Dan Rice slowly reveals a shimmering magical world, all while maintaining the perspective of a teenage girl and her sassy friends. Bolstered by a relatable cadre of characters and a whimsical storyline, Dragons Walk Among Us is a perfect balance of fantasy, suspense, excitement and fun!
