The most enjoyable new poetry book in years!
I’m just going to say it: From The Bowels Of My Heart is a book you should buy a paper copy of and keep in your bathroom. Partly because the poems are brief, and partly because the illustrations deserve to be seen on actual paper, and partly because it just seems like that’s where Ryan McCabe would want it to end up.
McCabe covers a myriad of topics in this relevant collection of poetry. The author’s musings on modern life include subjects ranging from text messaging to grammar… In retrospect, those poems are probably related. The book even successfully pokes fun at death. McCabe is endlessly insightful and unceasingly ironic. The tone of the book is light, perhaps even geared toward youths, but the impact is shockingly profound.
With the help of Aidan Terry’s delightful artwork, the poems completely come to life. The brevity is charming, meriting several re-reads. Surely I won’t be the only reader to compare From The Bowels Of My Heart to Where The Sidewalk Ends. Ryan McCabe has magnificently filled a gap in my literary library that I didn’t know existed. This is easily the most enjoyable new poetry book in years!
