Full Moon by Cyndi Cloutier

Wolves Crossing isn’t your typical Canadian community. It isn’t populated with humans, but instead werewolves! The story centers around Sam, a young werewolf who loses his hair after being tricked by his older sister. Fearing that he’ll become the laughing stock of Wolves Crossing, Sam and his friend Chris work together to correct his humiliating bald spots as quickly as possible. But will he be able to regrow his hair before the Harvest Moon Festival and before his school pictures? And in the meantime, will he be able to keep his secret hidden from his peers and neighbors?

The chapters and sentences are short, making it easy for beginning readers to handle. Although the characters are werewolves, there is nothing in the book that would scare young readers. The bulk of the story revolves around Sam’s attempts to get his hair back, which turn into an outrageous series of comical errors. Characters that could lead to learning lessons include a loyal best friend and a bullying older sister, and parents may also wish to note that this book quietly endorses seeking revenge against bullies.

Cyndi Cloutier offers an interesting glimpse into werewolf culture, using relatable characters in entertaining situations. Full Moon is a fun and enjoyable read that youths are sure to love.
