Within the enchanting town of Wickwood lies Relic, a charming antiques store run by Aubrey Karle. Without any family to speak of and a not-so-imaginary ghost as a long-time companion, it is no surprise that unusual things happen in her life. Things really begin to unravel for Aubrey when a tough looking stranger bounds wordlessly into Relic and she almost accidentally lobotomizes the man! Her ghost friend becomes erratic and even violent when the stranger, who is actually a fierce demon hunter named Roman, becomes an employee. However, Roman didn’t accidently wander into her shop looking for some mid-century furniture or a minimum wage job. Roman was called back to his hometown to stop literal Hell from being unleashed in Wickwood. His mission? Destroy the Karle orphan… Aubrey Karle. It shouldn’t be a problem, except that Roman is developing feelings for the woman and his intuition tells him that her soul is too bright to be destined for such evil. But in spite of his feelings, the prophecies have never lied before. There is definitely trouble brewing in Wickwood.
Ghost of a Summoning is like two completely dissonant books, but told in complete harmony. One major theme is the simmering romance building up between Roman and Aubrey. Both characters are so damaged that you can’t help but root for them to succeed. The other dramatic component is the demons, priests, prophecies, action, and suspense that abound throughout this twisting tale. J.E. McDonald weaves the two together so seamlessly that it’s difficult to imagine anyone that wouldn’t love this steamy and suspenseful story. Plus there is the element of humor, despite all the life-or-death matters. Roman has a hilarious adolescent demon sidekick named Moe who oozes orneriness and innocence in equal measure, stealing every page he shows up on.
