Little Saci Pererê: No More Mischief by Rachelle Jones Smith

A lively and entertaining story.

Teaching young children about mythology can be enlightening and entertaining for both the child and the parent. Through it, we are introduced to new cultures and beliefs, which helps us to be more understanding of those from all over this world we live in. With this in mind, Rachelle Jones Smith’s Myth Me book series is a wonderful gift to children everywhere. In Little Saci Pererê: No More Mischief, we learn about the Saci character of Brazilian folklore. While the illustrations include accurate details of Saci’s fabled physical features, such as him having only one leg and carrying a pipe (in this case a pipe that blows bubbles), the story itself focuses more on Saci Pererê’s infamously mischievous nature. However, as wild and misbehaved as this boisterous young boy can be, readers will be surprised to find that good can sometimes come from the most unexpected places.

Kids are sure to enjoy this tale of a rowdy little boy and his devilish antics. Rachelle Jones Smith’s fun, rhyming text makes Little Saci Pererê a delight to read aloud. The full-page illustrations are colorful and playful, exuding the emotions of the characters filling the pages. Whether it’s taunting farm animals or playing tricks on people that don’t give him sweets, the lively Saci Pererê does something humorous on nearly every page of the book. Parents and teachers can also use the misbehavior of Saci Pererê to teach kids the value of self-control and the importance of being respectful. While the legends of Greek mythology are well known the world over, I always find it interesting to learn about some of the underrepresented characters of folklore. You and your children will too in the case of Little Saci Pererê: No More Mischief. Rachelle Jones Smith has turned a lesser known fable into a lively and entertaining story that is as amusing as it is educational.
