The perfect high-octane mystery.
Detective Maxie Michaels is practically a legend in Corpus Christi, the saltwater town she calls home. She has an excellent record on the job and an even better reputation among the locals. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t take time for the small things. “Because you deal in homicides for a living doesn’t mean you can’t look good.” Wardrobe and wit intact, Maxie and her level-headed partner, Kobe, begin the investigation of a local reporter’s cousin, found dead in an alley. Well respected in the community, the victim doesn’t have any obvious enemies. However, the crime is just one of a rash of recent murders afflicting the area and it is beginning to look like something, or someone, more sinister may be running the show.
Texas Dead is a foot-jammed-on-the-gas-pedal crime novel with a solid plot and stellar characters. Maxie is a terrific lead who is strong enough to take on bad guys, yet soft enough to use ‘hun’ as a term of endearment. Really, though, it’s the small little touches that Gensburger adds that truly makes the characters jump off the pages. For example, Kobe has a refreshingly formal manner of speaking that is written so distinctly that you practically hear the resonance in his voice. As for plotting, perfectly timed clues, leads and suspects are revealed to readers seamlessly as the story’s current races forward to its comfortable conclusion. With twists, turns, and surprises galore, along with a few hearty laughs, Texas Dead is the perfect high-octane mystery.
