The Dream Defenders by Neal DenHartog

Young Nolan Erling lives an unremarkable life with his adoptive parents and brand new baby brother near Flagstaff. He has a charming relationship with his next-door neighbor and algebra teacher Frostee. He does okay in school and is a funny guy. His biggest problems include his resentment toward his brother and some persistent headaches. However, things get strange when a new girl in school, Aeryn, befriends him. She gives him an intriguing business card that guides him into the world of lucid dreamers and elaborate dreamscapes. Nolan learns that he can fly, which seems like every fourteen year-old’s dream. However, he quickly discovers that dreams are not always sweet. There are nightmares and even Deathmares to contend with. Will Nolan become an unlikely hero or will he fall victim to the predators most people don’t even realize exist?

The Dream Defenders is a spectacularly imaginative story. The main characters are teens and the book is geared toward that demographic. More mature readers, however, will enjoy the well thought out plot. The rich dream worlds are vivid and inviting. Some are dark and scary, others playful and silly. Just what you would expect from the mind of a teenage boy. There is a brilliant cast of adult players surrounding Nolan and Aeryn, making the story seem plausible. Neal DenHartog has written a dynamic book that features some really humorous characters. If you’re looking for a delightfully fun story, you’ll definitely want to read The Dream Defenders!
