The Jolly Bupbup by Ann P Borrmann

A delightful storybook for young children, worthy of the most lively story hour.

The jolly Bupbup lives in a cute little red house nestled at the edge of a ‘strange and marvelous wood field’ with a river close by. One fateful Wednesday, the rain begins to fall. The little Bupbup and her two cats enjoy watching the antics of the ducks and the fish as the river rises. Suddenly, the Bupbup’s sailboat is carried away by the river. The cats are no help since they don’t like to get their feet wet and the jolly Bupbup has no umbrella. “Poor little Bupbup felt all her jolly float away too.” Rather than remain in despair over her situation, the Bupbup chooses to pull herself up by the puddle-bootstraps and go for a walk outside. The adventure proves rewarding and she makes a friend along the way.

The Jolly Bupbup is a joyous children’s book filed with colorful illustrations and a clean, simple storyline. My favorite illustration highlights the scornful cats fretting over the Bupbup’s wet feet! The story is emotive, filled with heart. The perfectly paced poem at the beginning gives little readers something to hope for as the story moves along. The prose is effortlessly engrossing with a mix of easy to understand words and a few that are more challenging, such as boisterous, befuddled and indignant. Ann P Borrmann has crafted a delightful storybook for young children, worthy of the most lively story hour. The beautiful and engaging artwork paired with an approachable story will help little ones develop a true love for the written word.
