The Meerkat Murders is exciting and surprising and even heartwarming.
At the bequest of a dear friend, Kea Wright finds herself in the middle of a generously funded expedition documenting meerkats in the Kalahari desert. The faculty and students study not just the meerkat colonies of Botswana, but also rhinos, African bullfrogs, and more. Although Kea’s field of expertise is in geology, she is no stranger to drama and intrigue. A series of horrific events in her past make Kea the perfect sleuth when things take a murderous turn. With nobody to trust, Kea has to follow the clues to discover the perpetrator.
Kea Wright is a complicated woman. She wrestles with feelings of guilt and paranoia. There are many subtly funny references to advice given from her therapist. The cast of characters feels like playing Clue! The angry ex, the replacement wife, the goofy-yet-endearing professor…and that’s just the faculty. The students are similarly stereotypical in a campy, fun way. The mayhem ensues and the amateur investigation begins. The mystery is interesting but the charming little meerkat families really steal the show. Hazel, an outcast meerkat, becomes a secondary heroine and the main star!
