“You know things are not going well at the precinct when you get called in despite being signed off with injuries.” But in New York City, crime doesn’t take a sick day. A freelance journalist preparing funeral arrangements for her late husband is abducted from her home. A fitness instructor doesn’t show up at the gym for work. And the disappearance of these two women is just the beginning of something more sinister. But why these two women specifically? What do they have in common? With little time to heal from a dangerous case in Seattle, Detective Griffin Knight is tasked with the investigation. And when innocent lives are on the line, Griffin’s recuperation is just going to have to wait. The only thing connecting the two women is proximity, but that’s not much to go on. So Griffin does what he does best, he hits the streets and begins to find clues where others can’t. It doesn’t take long before he is on the right track, but solving a crime isn’t the only problem he’ll have to face. In true Griffin Knight style, his job turns into a race against the clock and a colossal confrontation. And not everyone is going to get out alive.
If you’re a fan of pulse-pumping fiction where the good guys often come out on top, this flashy installment in the Griffin Knight series will not let you down. Griffin deftly plays the role he was born for as he pursues the worst criminals humanity has seen. His ethics and sense of right and wrong remain at the forefront, but the addition of a brother with contrasting methodologies adds a layer of doubt. As for character development, the spotlight really shines on the shrewdly crafted antagonists. When the real devil of the story is finally revealed, readers will feel like they’ve taken a long, demented trip on a dark road that leads to nowhere good. The author has taken his time creating adversaries that are disturbed and disturbing in equal measure. Without a moment of wasted energy to be found, reading The Nocturnal Devil feels like watching an action movie in fast forward. So grab your popcorn and hold onto your hats because once you start this high-speed thriller, you’re not going to stop until you reach the dramatic ending.
